Banana Nut Oatmeal: To Help you Get More Sleep

A lot of us think about oatmeal as a morning meal, but this recipe shows that it can work as the opposite. On today's post we are going to share with you some key ingredients you should add to your oatmeal that will help you get a good nights sleep!

First are banana's that are rich in Vitamin B6, a vitamin necessary to produce the sleep-inducing hormone, melatonin, which is triggered by darker environments. Banana's are also a great source of potassium and magnesium which both as act natural muscle relaxants.

Walnuts are filled with their own source of melatonin according to the University of Texas researchers. Just like bananas, almonds are high in magnesium which helps you stay asleep longer.

A spoonful of honey is a fast-acting solution for better sleep for two reasons. First it "re-stocks the liver with glycogen and ensures getting through the night before the brain triggers a crisis search for fuel," and secondly honey stimulates the release of the hormone tryptophan, which is eventually converted into melatonin.

Lastly, steel cut oats are a natural source of melatonin and are an easily digested carb. Almost all of these foods release melatonin which is one of the most important hormones to help you get a good night's sleep. Not only will does melatonin help you sleep throughout the night, but it also heals you quicker and rejuvenates you for the next day.

Now after learning about the many benefits of walnuts, almonds, honey, bananas, and oats here's the quick and easy recipe to make this oatmeal!

If you cook your oatmeal on the stove, first boil 3/4 cup of water in a pot and then add 1 cup of steel cut oatmeal and stir consistently. Cook your oatmeal for a few minutes, or until you have reached your desired consistency.

If you prefer microwaving it, add 1 cup of steel cut oatmeal and add in 3/4 cup of water and microwave for 2-3 minutes. Once your oatmeal is done, add one 1 teaspoon of honey on top, half of a chopped banana, 1 table spoon of chopped walnuts, and 1 table spoon of sliced almonds! You can always add a dash of cinnamon to top it all off, then enjoy!
