What's better then perfecting a delicious drink recipe?... Well enjoying it! That's why we want to share this refreshing and homemade margarita recipe that will have you feeling like a true mixologist!
What You'll Need:
- 4 - 6 Limes
- 1 Cup of sugar
- 1 box of fresh strawberries
- Fresh basil leaves
- 2 to 2 1/2 cups of Tequila
We are going to make the simple syrup that will sweeten our beverage. First zest 1 lime and keep all shavings. In a saucepan you want to combine 1 cup of sugar, the zest from your lime, and 1 cup of water. Over medium-high heat, continue to stir until the sugar is melted. You then want to strain the mixture by pouring it into a cup and setting aside to cool.
(If you're like me and you don't have a strainer small enough to separate the zest of the lime, use a dish towel instead! It may sound crazy, but the fabric will easily separate the zest from the rest of the liquid. It also may be easier to do with the aid of someone else, if one holds the dish towel over the cup while the other pours the liquid into the cup.)
Rinse and slice your strawberries and then add them to the pitcher. You then want to take your basil leaves and pick the leaves off the stem and gently bruise them before adding to the pitcher.
(Bruising helps extract more flavor from the leaves and doing it is quite simple! Just take the basil leaves and put them in the palm of your hand and gently squeeze a few times. You should begin to smell a stronger aroma and the leaves should have some creases in them; this means your basil leaf has been bruised.)
Next you'll add your tequila over the strawberries and basil leaves. You can use whichever flavor you prefer, we happened to add 1 cup of normal tequila and 1 cup of Jose Cuervo Golden Margarita Grapefruit to add a little extra flavor. Then mix in all the simple syrup and squeeze the juice of the 4 limes into your pitcher. Mix well and taste a sip; adjust with more lime juice if desired.
